Australian Social Policy Conference 2023

The Children’s Policy Centre will be presenting two papers at the Australian Social Policy Conference 2023: Social Policy for Social Change relating to our More for Children research project.

On Monday 11 September, Professor Sharon Bessell and Dr Cadhla O’Sullivan will be presenting on Australia’s approach to asylum seekers and refugees from a child standpoint, discussing the need for child centred approaches to be embedded in policies towards asylum seekers and refugees, to ensure that children’s human rights are protected and their relational and material well-being is secured.

On Tuesday 12 September Professor Sharon Bessell and David Tennant will be presenting on When State Neglect Creates Child Poverty, where they will outline research undertaken with children aged between six and sixteen years, through the More for Children project, which uses rights-based, participatory methods to understand both children’s experiences of poverty and the drivers of that poverty. Sharon and David will highlight the importance of ending state neglect and rethinking policies in ways that ensure the best interests and human rights of all children.
